Progress Report – October 2015

So October 2015 kept me going. And I needed that!

Posted Works

First of all, on Fanfiction.net, I posted The Stranger. I then added A Lesson and began to post A Long, Long Time Ago.

In addition, on Wattpad, I began to post Fortune.

So then on the G & T Show forums, I posted Letters from Home, Throwing Rocks at Looking Glass Houses, Paving Stones Made From Good Intentions, Bribery, The Light, First Born, and Waiting. I then started to post Reversal.

Finally, on Fictionpad, I posted the Clockworks collection, consisting of: A Lesson; Briefing; Candy; Desperation; Marvels; Pat the Bunny; Preparations; Recruitment; The Honky Tonk Angel; and Where O Where. I also imported Faith, Seven Women, The Decision, and The Stranger.

Hence there were a lot of changes although admittedly many of them were pretty damned effortless or close to it.

WIP Corner

There is a lot going on. However, the Barnstorming series is mainly on hold as I work out NaNo and do schoolwork.

Prep Work

So as the month wound down, I got caught up in getting reading for this year’s NaNoWriMo. Also, this meant more work on The Enigman Cave, including naming many of the characters and the ships in that fleet. Because these are small decisions, but they can really slow you down if you don’t get them done, I am happy to have them all set in advance of the first of November!

This Month’s Productivity Killers

School work and travel! In addition, my cousin got married in the middle of the month and that of course changed my routine. We also put together the 24 Hours of G & T and that kept me busy. I was one tired pup!

Progress Report – July 2015

July 2015 saw me adding onto more preexisting Star Trek fan fiction works. In addition, I wrote parts of the Barnstorming series. However, two years later (welcome to the future!), that series does not yet have an end point.

Posted Works

First of all, on Wattpad, I added to the In Between Days Collection by posting Tumult, Achieving Peace, Shell Shock, The Conspiracy, and Gilded Cage. I started to post Temper.

Also, on Ad Astra, I finished posting Infinite Diversity.

Furthermore, on Fanfiction.net, I finished posting About Nine Months and then posted Education, The Decision, and Faith.

In addition, on Fictionpad, I added Education.

Finally, on the G & T Show, I finished Theorizing and then posted Gratitude; Gossip Gossip; Onions; Penicillin; Demotion; and started Conversations With Heroes.

WIP Corner

I continued preparing The Enigman Cave for this years’ NaNoWriMo in November. In addition, I also kept perfecting the last two books in the Obolonk series, The Polymer Beat and The Badge of Humanity. Hence this was to prepare and clear the decks for this year’s NaNoWriMo project. Also, I finished the first draft of the Barnstorming book, Time Out, and began the final book in that series, Overtime.

Prep Work

Also, I spent time on Wattpad getting future postings together in draft form. Hence that was meant to save me time later.

This Month’s Productivity Killers

So I had plenty to do at school. Plus I became a Wattpad Ambassador, and that took up a lot of my time. Because time is a finite thing, it had to come from somewhere. Hence it mainly came from Star Trek fan fiction writing time, I am so sorry to report.

Progress Report – June 2015

June 2015 meant I was still writing a lot of Star Trek fan fiction although it was starting to wind down just a bit.

Posted Works

First of all, on G & T Show forums, I finished posting Concord and then returned to Before Days with Voracious, Harvest, Before the Fall, and then Protocols, and then began to post Theorizing.

Also, on Fanfiction.net, I finished posting Theorizing and then added Gratitude, Red, Linfep Linfep Linfep, Colleagues, If I Could See, and then began to post About Nine Months.

In addition, on Fictionpad, I posted Theorizing, Gratitude, Red, Linfep Linfep Linfep, Colleagues, and If I Could See.

Plus on Wattpad, I finished posting Together and then posted Where No Gerbil Has Gone Before, which was also entered into this year’s Watty Awards, with a new cover. In the In Between Days collection, I added Equilibrium, Movie Night, The Cure is Worse Than the Disease, and Ceremonial.

Finally, on Ad Astra, I posted a drabble taking place in Captain Sarine’s universe, Appearances. Sharp-eyed readers will see Pete Porter, a relative of Polly and the Barnstorming character Tamsin. The story was too short to be considered for the voting in the ‘Steal All the Toys’ challenge. I also worked with kes7 to advance our Tesseract/Times of the HG Wells crossover, Paradox, in the Collaboration Station challenge. I began to post the 7-day challenge and went with an IDIC theme, Infinite Diversity.

WIP Corner

I continued perfecting the last two books in the Obolonk trilogy. I also worked on the Barnstorming-Times of the HG Wells crossover story, Time Out.

Prep Work

In anticipation of NaNoWriMo 2015, I began to really think about the shape of this year’s story, which takes place in a new universe (although some of the tech is related to the Obolonks) and is tentatively called The Enigman Cave.

School, and the ever-present search or work both kept me from being as productive as I would have liked. I also trained to become an Ambassador on Wattpad.

Progress Report – May 2015

May 2015 held a lot of promise.

Posted Works

However, I kept the postings down as I was busy with school.

First of all, on Wattpad, I continued posting Together. I entered a fanfiction contest with Red.

In addition, on the G & T Show Forums,

I followed the same format I had followed on Wattpad, and began to spin out Before Days with If You Can’t Stand the Heat, Cobbled Together. I began to add Concord.

Also, I updated The All-Stars on Ad Astra. I added an unexpected little In Between Days story, If I Could See. For the Twelve Trials of Triskelion, I posted a Times of the HG Wells story about Richard Daniels‘s many conquests, The Stranger, for the Ficlet Flashdance. I dipped into Captain Sarine’s Restoration universe for a drabble, Appearances.

Furthermore, on Fanfiction.net, I finished posting Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. I started posting Theorizing.

Finally, I added Promise and Everybody Knows This is Nowhere to Fictionpad.

WIP Corner

So as a part of clearing the decks and prepping for November, I continued editing and polishing the wholly original story, The Badge of Humanity. The Obolonks Murders went in for more beta reading, as did The Polymer Beat. In addition, I had the start of a story for November.

Prep Work

I worked some more on the Barnstorming series in order to work on resolving it, and came up with an idea for another series after that one. I also got some ideas for upcoming writing challenges.

Review – Friday Visit

Friday Visit fixes some plot holes.

Background

For a look at Doug and Lili‘s early married life, from even before Joss, I went with what was essentially a scene missing from Together.

In Between Days

In that story, Lili is already in possession of the Cuff of Lo.

But how did she get it in the first place?

Plot

Newlyweds Lili and Doug are talking in their rented home on Lafa II as the story opens, and Doug reminds Lili to take it easy and get some rest. She is pregnant and they have recently opened Reversal. Her pregnancy also isn’t as easy as it could be. She is being run ragged.

But she reminds him that they are going to visit Treve and his family. Because this is after the events of Reversal, Chawev is in prison. Yipran is out of the medical center, but is shaky. Chelben is still a little boy, and Yimar is still a fairly young tween.

When Yipran predicts that the cuff will go to Lili’s third child, Doug and Lili look at each other in some surprise. It seems as if Jeremiah Logan – Joss – would be something of a miracle child, given Lili’s age and the fact that Doug is actually a Terran and not, truly, a human. It does not seem to make any sense that there could be two more in the future. But they are polite and do not dismiss Yipran’s prediction out of hand.

Upshot

I liked putting together a little slice of Calafan life. It seems that, often, Star Trek fan fiction does not fill in the blanks when it comes to civilian living, or to the lives of aliens. I hope I have filled in the missing pieces a bit with this story.

Progress Report – February 2015

February 2015 was another fairly light month as I was busy with work, school, podcasting, and my published work. It was also the snowiest month in Boston’s history so I was rather busy shoveling snow and dealing with all of that. Yes, it was really that bad.

Posted Works

First of all, I added It Had to Be You and Alien Encounter to the G & T Show forums. I also combined Coffee and Siberians, releasing them as Caffeinated Voyage. I combined D’Storlin and the two Freak School stories, releasing them as The Archer Academy at Oberon. Hence that site saw a lot of my Voyager fan fiction and some of my more out-there stuff. Because who does not like a little Gorn in their life?

In addition, on Wattpad, I continued contributing to Intolerance.

Finally, on Fanfiction.net, I continued adding to Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.

Milestones

Twenty Star Trek fan fiction stories now have 10,000 or more reads, either individually or in combination. And another twenty stories have 75 or more reviews. However, the only story with both is Reversal. In addition, the only non-fan fiction story with both is Revved Up. Hence I have a pretty decent readership but not an overwhelming one. And that is all right!

I worked on promotions for my published work. I also believe I may have a viable idea for this year’s NaNoWriMo.

Progress Report – January 2015

January 2015 was busy.

Posted Works

It was a good month for tying up some small loose ends online.

First of all, I added The Reptile Speaks, Insecurity, Losin’ It, Transported, Truth, Where No Gerbil Has Gone Before and That’s Not My Name to the G & T Show forums.

On Wattpad, I added In Between Days as an anthology, adding Apple, Local Flavor, A Kind of Blue, Brown, Gainful, The Tribe, and Friday Visit to it. Plus I started spinning out Intolerance.

I posted Supply and Demand, Quartermaster, Worry, Promise, and Marbles to Fanfiction.net. I started posting Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.

Also, I imported the following completed stories to Fictionpad: Supply and Demand, Quartermaster, Worry, Marbles, and The Three of Us.

On Ad Astra, in response to a prompt about crack ship pairings, I posted a new Times of the HG Wells story, Makeover.

Milestones

Over eighty stories have at least ten reviews and 1,000 reads. And of those, twenty have twenty or more reviews and 5,000 or more reads. Of those, five have fifty or more reviews and 10,000 or more reads. And of those, two have one hundred or more combined reviews and over 20,000 reads, Reversal and Revved Up, which accomplishes this feat with only one posting.

WIP Corner

I worked on The Badge of Humanity, the third and final book in the Obolonk trilogy. Also, I spent time on the earlier two books, including working with beta readers.

Prep Work

I worked on my Amazon author pages and my Facebook author page, and I continued requesting reviews for Untrustworthy. Plus I even sent out some signed copies!

This Month’s Productivity Killers

Being published! Seriously – as paradoxical as it may sound, you get emotional and busy, and so it’s more difficult to concentrate on being productive. Plus I spent a lot of time concentrating on wholly original work; Star Trek fan fiction was often set aside in favor of that. I was also, in the final third of the month, again immersed in school at Quinnipiac.

Progress Report – November 2014

November 2014, I wrote for NaNoWriMo. Hence this was the second Obolonk book, The Polymer Beat.

Posted Works

So I continued posting Reversal on Wattpad and The Three of Us on Fanfiction.net. And on the G & T Show forums, I posted Across the Universe and began to post Hold Your Dominion. Also, on Ad Astra, I unexpectedly got an idea and added Gratitude, yet another take on Lili killing She Who Almost Didn’t Breed in Time. Hence I added that story to the In Between Days Collection, along with Bomb(e), Dishing it Out, Flight of the Bluebird, Red, The Decision, and Theorizing.

Milestones

There are over 75 stories with (combined) at least 10 reviews and 1,000 reads. Of those, 17 have at least 20 reviews and 5,000 reads, and three of those have 50 or more combined reviews and 10,000 or more combined reads (Intolerance, Reversal, and Take Back the Night). So of non-Star Trek stories, three of the six posted (I’m not including Untrustworthy or the Obolonk stories in this group) have over 100 reviews, and two of those have over 6,000 reads (Revved Up and The Social Media Guide). Revved Up has over 30,000 reads, which makes it the second-most read individual story after Reversal on Ad Astra, and third-most read when you count combined reads (Together beats it with over 31,000 combined reads). WIP Corner

I spent the month doing NaNoWriMo! I added over 50,000 words to The Polymer Beat, which is the second book in the Obolonk trilogy, and finished the story. This was also a productive effort for other reasons. Because I could put together many stray loose ends. These became a preliminary outline for the third book, The Badge of Humanity.

Prep Work

I spent some time splitting up Everybody Knows This is Nowhere in preparation for posting it on Fanfiction.net.

Apart from NaNo (technically not a productivity killer at all, except that it kills non-NaNo productivity), the main issues were schoolwork and looking for work.

Progress Report – October 2014

October 2014 was full of work!

Posted Works

I started the month finishing The Canadian Caper, the Postmodern Jukebox adventure which is highly likely to be the first popfic ever written about the band. On Wattpad, I finished Before Days by adding First Born. I also finished The Social Media Guide, and began to post Reversal. I submitted eight works to the #Wattys2014 (The 2014 Watty Awards):

On Fanfiction.net, I continued spinning out The Three of Us. And on Ad Astra, I added a response to a prompt about discoveries. Because it was the first of the month, I called it Linfep Linfep Linfep. I also responded to a prompt about embarrassment by posting a Melissa–Leonora story, Red. In addition, I posted Theorizing.

Finally, on the G & T Show forums, I finished spinning out Recessive and added Across the Universe.

Milestones

So with over 75 stories with at least 10 reviews and 1000 reads, I am beginning to see some real benefit from this kind of popularity. Hence at this point, the In Between Days collection is the third-most read story on Ad Astra. So it benefits from the Top Ten listing. Also, In Between Days is also the fourth-largest series on that site, and is the series with the most reviews. In addition, I am the third-most prolific author and may very well hit second place before the end of the calendar year. Finally, on Wattpad, I have more than 500 followers and am looking to get 1,000 as I believe I will get a lot more reads there once I do. That is because it seems to be an identifiable milestone that is respected there.

I continued working on The Polymer Beat, the second book in the wholly original Obolonk series.

Prep Work

I entered the title of The Polymer Beat into the NaNoWriMo site. So I have entered as a so-called rebel, as I don’t have the time to start something new this year.

I created a Facebook Author page to promote my work.

This Month’s Productivity Killers

In preparation for beginning to take two courses at a time at Quinnipiac (to start in January of 2015 and go for all three semesters of that year), I continued working hard to get ahead on work such as keeping the Twitter stream filled, etc. I also worked on social media for the G & T Show.

Review – The Gift

Which gift matters to most?

Background

As a Star Trek fanfiction follow up to Pacing, I wanted Doug‘s second Christmas gift to Lili to be a huge surprise (as of the writing of this blog post, I have not yet written their first Christmas together).

In Between Days

For Lili, this will be the culmination, as her dreams truly do come true and she gets what she’s always really needed, ever since she was nine years old – a home.

Plot

Lili is sleep-deprived and anxious, as Joss is still a young baby. She’s barely functional, like a lot of new parents are.

Doug hands her an article wrapped in paper, which she opens. Annoyed, she announces that her present is a wooden spatula. She then proceeds to place it into the holder with all of her other wooden spatulas. It seems the essence of a thoughtless, last-minute present. She is getting upset. Doug is going to have to salvage the situation.

Then Doug tells her that the spatula does not matter in terms of the present; instead, it’s the paper it’s wrapped in.

That paper turns out to be his own crudely-drawn plans for their house.

And that house, eventually, becomes a possession of the Temporal Museum on Lafa II. Much like the family, it endures. Eleanor even gives tours of it.

Upshot

I like this short story as a direct sequel to Pacing, as it fulfills the promise of the earlier piece. Both stories also prefigure a great deal of the In Between Days series, and begin to set the stage for more of the series. I like how it turned out.
